So what's the point of all this malarky?
The POINT, my dear friend, is to share information about the wealth of unsigned music out there (ok and signed - just whatever you listening to at the moment). BreakthroughChart.com is a melting pot of all things great (and musical) - somewhere for the masses to congregate and bask in the wonder of new found talent. The great public, by clicking on BreakIt icons on tracks across the web, are voting for what they like - and in doing so telling you who haven't encountered these tracks to check them out! The more BreakIt's a track gets - the further up the home page chart and it's own category chart it goes. Top >>
Why should I register with BreakthroughChart.com?
Joining BreakthroughChart.com lets you contribute to the music reatured on the site, by letting you add links to/descriptions of the tracks you're loving at the moment! Come on - spread the love! Top >>
What's it gonna cost me?
Nothing. Nada. Zip. Free info for music lovers. Free promotion for music makers. Wouldn't it be cool if more things in life were like this? Top >>
Do I have to register with BreakthroughChart.com to enjoy the site?
Nope - you can browse the music in all the different categories/charts without joining. You can even leave comments on the tracks you have something to say about, and click on the BreakIt widgit to send them further up the chart. However, you won't be able to add details of tracks you've discovered and want to point out to other people until you join. Which is what we're all about - sharing and discovering new music! It only takes a minute (girl) so join now! Top >>
What's a widgit?
A widgit is a few lines of code you can add to a webpage/myspace. It's very easy - just copy and paste. This short bit of code then shows a graphic on the webpage, which when people click on it, sends a message to our site, letting us know that someone has voted to Break that particular track. So our clever site then pushes that track further up the charts! Top >>
How do I get a widgit?
Once you've joined, you can go to Add Track and enter details of the tracks you're either loving, or a part of if you're in a band/are an artist. Once you've added the track you'll magically be shown the widgit code! Top >>
I added a track ages ago but I need my widgit code again!
No worries - go to you Added Tracks in your Profile and click on the little icon on whichever track to view the widgit again. Top >>
What's an avatar?
An avatar is a little piccy of yourself, or something that represents yourself, that is displayed next to any comments you leave on BreakthroughChart.com. These pics must be DECENT (as in, not rude, offensive or unsightly) and can't be bigger than 1MB. Top >>
What's a Track Info Url?
It's the web address of a page people can visit to find out more about the track you're talking about. So it might be a page on that band's website for example. Top >>
What's a Track mp3 Url?
If a mp3 music file is uploaded to cyberspace (the Internet) then it'll have an address of where it is located. Someting like, http://www.theband.com/theirmusic/hit1.mp3. Put this URL in here and it'll mean we can link straight to that file and people can click on the play button on BreakthroughChart.com to play it. Top >>
So does that mean you copy the track?
No no no - certainly not! We are merely linking to that same file - playing the exact file that that band/artist has put on-line. No nasty illegal copying or downloading involved. Top >>
"I have permission to add this track to BreakthroughChart.com" - err - I don't know, do I?
Well if it's a track by your band and you're all happy to add it, then yeah! Ofcourse you do! Or if it's on your website/myspace then we guess you've already sort the appropriate permission - so yes again (but like we said, only if you sought the appropriate permission). If it's a track you love by someone else and the info and the mp3 are their website then you should check with them first. But we stress that BreakthroughChart.com does not do anything dodgy or nasty with the info submitted - we just put it up for our visitors to see and enjoy. We just promote good music! Top >>
So if I join are you going to sell my details to people selling drugs online and spam me with a gzillion emails a day?
Nope. We receive that as much as you already do - so we certainly don't intend to add to the problem. We might send you the occassional newsletter, but we'll never pass your details to third parties. Read our privacy policy for more reassurance. Top >>
Where's the catch? How do you make any money doing this?
You see those boxes on the side? The ones with adverts in them? That's how. We need to cover the costs of hosting a site like this, and put bread on our table to eat whilst we busying away adding cool new features to the site. But there's nothing that gets in the way with your user experience or that costs you anything. Top >>
I'm in a band but we don't have a website or a myspace so how can I use my widgit?!
You can still add your track to BreakCharts.com and it'll be listed in it's relevant category/categories so visitors to the site can find it and click to BreakIt if they've heard the track at a gig or whatever. And then if/when you set up a myspace page you can come back and add the track again with the link to the mp3 etc. If you want a super swish website to promote your band, we might know some people who can help you... drop us a line and we'll get you on the right track.
